Is it because we live the same moment that we produce forms which ressemble one another? In the 1950’s Jose Mendoza designed the Pascal font in Paris. Herman Zapf pipped him to the publishing post in 1958 by launching Optima, which was suspiciously similar. Scandal, industrial espionnage or… air du temps ?
To this day, each creation resonates to the trends of its time, and crystallises contemporary preoccupations and fashions. Whether spontaneous or orchestrated, these trends spread, relayed by the shakers and movers, peddled by thousands of followers.
While some of us, pathfinders of the avant-garde, explore what the future holds, others make return visits to the timeless, or re-mix the classics. Technical innovations, economic forces, perennial standard designs, cultural heritage, even whimsical fads all influence the forms which we produce.
How do we show our singularity in the mainstream, how do we suggest alternatives, or, on the contrary, how do we best espouse the trends of our time ?
