Amateur or enthusiast ? The word « Amateur » in the French language has its origins of course in the verb « aimer »… He or she who arranges their activities around the concept of pleasure is known in French as an « amateur ». Dilettantes, dreamers, enquirers, tinkerers, connoisseurs, collectors, adventurers. We take this opportunity to put together a portrait of these « amateurs » at a time when creative tools and means of digital publication have become more easily accessible to non-professionals. At his or her worst when accepting the second-rate, or when, albeit in a well-meaning manner, the « amateur » becomes embroiled in his or her quirky, obsessional approach, or when mimicking the « gurus », he or she becomes an impostor. At their best when, unfettered by the chains of constraint, conventions or commercial interests he or she contributes to the preservation of a neglected heritage, or when being the first to explore new ground, even at the risk of breaking with conventional rules or protocols.
Finding your own way can be risky, and may lead to a lamentable lapse into imitation, or, on the contrary, to a renewal of practices and approaches.
From 25th to 31st of August 2013, in Lurs, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, Les Rencontres internationales de Lure will illuminate, just for once, these astonishing experimentations which are all too often left in the shadows.
